The earliest known oil wells were drilled using bamboo poles in China. The first oil well in the United States was located near Titusville, Pennsylvania and began producing 25 barrels of oil per day in 1859. It was drilled using a steam engine and 10 foot sections of cast iron pipe.
The first oil rig built in saltwater was off the coast of California in the late 1800’s. From that point on, the exploration for oil lost any semblance of being landlocked. Today there are many types of oil rigs (known also as drilling platforms): there are fixed, floating, semi-submersible, and jack-up rigs, to mention a few. Located about 150 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico is the “Independence Hub” which produces natural gas and is the world’s deepest platform.
