316 Stainless Steel Bands & Straps
316 stainless steel provides superior corrosion resistance for use in a marine environment, or where band may come in contact with mild chemicals. Of all the banding products commonly used for banding, Type 316 Stainless Steel is the most rust and corrosion resistant.
316 stainless steel overview
Stainless steel is the common name for a number of alloys that contain at least 10.5 to 11% chromium by mass. This particular mixture allows the metal to stand up to corrosion more effectively than normal steel. Although all stainless steel is more resilient than steel, there are different alloys and finishes available that make the metal more resistant to certain environments.
Of the available alloys, 316 stainless steel is very resistant to corrosion, more so than the 304 alloy. It also has properties that make it very good for forming and welding.
Common applications
This particular stainless steel alloy is used in many applications because it is able to withstand hostile environments, stand up to corrosion from several acids including hydrochloric, sulfuric, and formic acids. Some places you may find 316 stainless steel include:
- Banding & strapping
- Springs
- Equipment for food preparation
- Buckles
- Surgical implants
- Wing seals
- Sign brackets
- Transportation
- Welding
